Why the Gym Is Really About Belonging (And What My Son’s Camp Taught Me)

A certified personal trainer on fear, connection, and why just showing up changes everything.

We’re all looking for the same thing really.

A place to belong. A place to feel seen. A place where someone says… you matter, you’re here, you’re important.

I was reminded of that recently in the most unexpected way.

The Camp That Almost Didn’t Happen

My son Richie recently attended HUGS Camp, an inclusive summer camp in North Carolina where campers of all abilities are paired with a buddy and get to experience a full traditional camp experience… swimming, field games, campfires, all of it. Spots are incredibly hard to come by. Registration opens for just two hours one day a year. It is that special.

He almost didn’t go.

For days leading up to it he protested. Over and over, the way his OCD does… relentless and exhausting. I was completely distraught the Friday night before he was supposed to leave. My mom was crying saying he shouldn’t have to go.

And then my phone lit up.

A counselor from one of Richie’s other programs happened to see his name on the HUGS Camp list and reached out. She was so excited to see him there. I told her everything. How nervous I was. That it was going to be his birthday during camp. That I didn’t know what to do. It was late on a Friday night and she stayed right there with me in that conversation until we had a plan.

The next morning I talked to the head counselor. Together we figured it out. He would go for two days. On his birthday we’d give him the option to come home or stay. No pressure. Just an out if he needed one.

That out was all he needed to say yes.

On his birthday, the counselors called me.

He doesn’t want you to come. He’s having the best time. He’s staying.

I cannot describe what that felt like.

At the closing ceremony I watched his friends wrap their arms around him. Not performing it. Genuinely. A real care for Richie, the kind that tells someone… you are here, you matter, you belong.

I tried not to cry. My body said… cue the ugly tears.

What We’re All Really Looking For

I remember a line from a movie that has always stuck with me. We get married because we want someone to witness our life. But I think that line can be changed. Because it doesn’t have to be a spouse. It can be a best friend, a sibling, a person who knows all your stories because they were there for them. Someone who can say… I saw you. You were here. You belonged.

In twenty years of working in fitness, and even as a fourteen year old walking into a gym for the first time, some of the most important people in my life have found me through movement. There’s something about showing up as your real self, sweaty and unfiltered, that makes real connection possible. If you’re a woman navigating perimenopause and wondering how fitness fits into this season of life, I wrote about it here.

That’s what I want Good Gaines to be for every person who walks through the door.

Why the Gym Is Different

Here’s something I don’t think gets said enough about fitness communities. When you walk through that door, you are your real self. We’re not all the way put together. We’re not performing anything. We’re just there. Showing up. That’s the whole thing.

You cannot fake how you’re feeling during burpees. You cannot fake a push up. You are exactly who you are in that moment. Nothing more, nothing less.

And something really beautiful happens when a group of real people show up together like that. You stop performing for each other and you start pushing each other. That’s why I always say my five AM team, my six AM team. Because that’s what it is. A team. People in it together.

Just show up. Let me take care of the rest.

The Science Behind Why It Feels So Good

I know it seems counterintuitive. You’re already exhausted from decision making, worry, and the noise that never quite turns off in the back of your mind. And now someone is asking you to do something that takes even more energy?

But here’s what the science actually backs up. Movement releases serotonin, dopamine, and adrenaline. It literally recalibrates your brain chemistry. The energy you spend working out comes back to you multiplied. Not as a reward. As a biological fact.

You will feel better after. Every single time.

And the people who need you… need you strong. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Everything You Want Is On the Other Side of Fear

Is there something you’ve been on the fence about? Something sitting in the back of your mind that you keep almost doing but haven’t quite yet? Just approach it with no expectations. Just try. Just start. That’s when everything changes.

Richie was brave enough to walk through the fear. I was brave enough to let him go.

And on the other side of all of it was exactly what we were both looking for.

A place to belong.
